Any student of architecture requires:
1. Artistic and creative skills: As architecture is an amalgamation of art and science, one should have a sense of proportions, colour schemes and aesthetics.
2. Interest in human relationships: As an architect, you must handle clients as well as allied consultants like vendors, contractors, skilled workers, and unskilled labour.
3. They should be interested in research, as every project requires lots of work before starting the design.

Work Environment
Architects spend much of their time in offices, where they develop plans, meet with clients, and consult with engineers and other architects. They also visit construction sites to prepare initial. drawings and review the progress of projects to ensure that clients’ objectives are met. There are many avenues that are available for a young architect to progress in his career. Public sector undertakings like BSNL, NFCL, BHEL, Public Works Departments, CPWD, Urban Development Authorities, Municipalities, Municipal Corporations, and many other entities have architects on their roll. Military Engineering Services also has Architects on its roll.
There are many opportunities in the private sector like Architectural Consultancy Service Firms, Software Parks, Facilities and Services Planning wings of big infrastructure entities, Gaming and VFX firms, Film set Designing, Interior contracting firms and many more. Freelancing, setting up own office, Architectural Journalism, Architectural Tourism, and many more creative opportunities are also there. Teaching is one challenging career that is opening as the need for Architectural education is growing.
How to Become an Architect
Architecture education is governed and regulated by the Council of Architecture in India. To pursue an undergraduate program in Architecture (B. Arch) in India, there are 3 exams that one may target:
1. NATA: To get admission into 400+ architecture colleges in India. This test is conducted by CoA. Many Universities including deemed universities accept NATA.
2. JEE (Paper 2): To get admission into 20+ NITs and other Centrally Funded Universities providing B. Arch programs. Universities other than NITs include School of Planning and Architecture(SPA) (Delhi, Bhopal & Vijayawada), GITAM (Deemed to be University), and Jamia Millia Islamia.
3. JEE MAINS (Paper 1 + Paper 2) + JEE Advanced (Paper 1 + Paper 2) + Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT): To get admission into 2 IITs – Kharagpur and Roorkee which provide B. Arch Programs.
Students are ranked to get through B. Arch programs, as follows:
1. NATA: 50% of 12th Board score + 50% of NATA Score – Applicants will be given a state rank through which they can secure admissions to colleges in each state considering the reservation categories of that particular state.
2. IIT JEE (Paper 2): For schools like SPA’s and NITs which take admissions only through JEE Paper 2, students must secure a minimum of 75% in their 12th board exams. Ranking is provided by each of the universities independently through which they can secure admissions considering the reservation categories
3. IIT JEE + IIT Advanced + Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT): Ranking will be given based on students completing JEE-Mains + JEE-Advanced and AAT – Applicants will be given an All India Rank (AIR) through which they can secure admissions to universities considering the reservation categories
How is Architecture different from Civil Engineering?
While Architecture is the profession of Designing buildings keeping in view the aspirations and requirements of building users, Civil Engineering looks into the design of the building with respect to the safety and stability of the building structures. While an architect’s role is the application of his creative genius to design the building and more often off-site work, a civil engineer’s role is more at on-site, design of foundations, structure, superstructure, construction management, quality management etc.
