Ornate wood & stone carvings: The intricate stone & solid wood carvings that adorned ancient palaces and monuments of India are now blended into modern interiors. They say what we leave behind is something that we take forward. The fine stone carving of India is celebrated by the modern architects of India. Stone Inlays which are seen in Mughal architectural masterpieces like the Taj Mahal etc. have been used by designers for dining table tops or even to add a visually striking element into a space.
Jali Work: The forts and palaces of Rajasthan have intrinsic jali or latticework. These ornate jalis also served as a privacy screen while allowing the passage of air. Wooden or stone jalis have been incorporated into modern architecture even through contemporary brick jalis. The forms may have become less ornate but the concept remains the same with the brick jalis. Jalis creates a strong pattern of shadow with diffused light.
Cut mirror works of Jaipur – Cut mirror works at Sheesh Mahal of Jaipur are an exemplary reflection of the rich culture and heritage of the bygone era. This creation has shown the world a graceful and magnificent piece of architecture detailed painstakingly by the devoted artisans. The walls are adorned with a cut convex-shaped mirror from Belgium transforming it into a shimmering piece of art. Arches: Arches are a beautiful ancient design feature which is again gaining back its importance in modern neoclassical architecture. These strong features can transform the look of any building. Arches in repetition look appealing in corridors. Arches are also structurally stable due to their form and can be constructed without concrete lintels. Modern-day architects are using arches due to their soft curves that provide a welcome change from the straight angles, thus blending technology with tradition.
Central courtyard & surrounding verandahs: Central courtyard was an integral element of ancient Indian architecture providing ample natural light and ventilation to the home interiors. In many homes, the courtyard was flanked by corridors and verandahs from which the various rooms could be accessed. These provide shade and protection from rain. Modern architects are designing beautiful green spaces within the building and surrounding corridors.
Local and natural materials: Modern architects are exploring sustainable local natural materials instead of concrete etc as they have a very low carbon footprint due to negligible transportation cost. All ancient palaces were built predominantly with local stone. Since time immemorial architects have used local materials for construction and now architects are rediscovering the usage of bamboo, local wood, local granite or stone, bricks etc. as per the region and designing around them.
Use of Alcoves or niches and swings: In traditional Indian architecture alcoves or niches were used to keep Diya’s at night. There was always a swing in the verandah overlooking the garden. These traditional features of the past are integrated now with modern design sensibility.
Today’s modern Indian architect is creating unique spaces with an eclectic mix of traditional architectural elements and modern functionality. Handmade carvings, inlays, old blue pottery tiles, and jalis all have evolved and revised in the modern context.
